Johannes Pietsch: The Voice Uniting Pop and Opera

Johannes Pietsch, widely known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer and songwriter who captured international acclaim by winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 for Austria. Renowned for his distinct blend of classical opera and modern pop, Pietsch has quickly carved out a unique space in the contemporary music landscape.

Early Life and Global Roots

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch comes from a diverse cultural background. He was born to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother. Spending a major part of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, he was exposed to a rich blend of musical influences early on—ranging from family karaoke pop sessions to classical opera introduced by his father.

In 2016, his family moved back to Vienna, where Pietsch pursued rigorous classical training. He attended the opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later studied at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

Rise to Prominence and Eurovision Victory

Before his breakthrough on the European stage, Pietsch built experience through prominent television talent platforms:

  • The Voice UK (2020): He competed in the ninth series after missing the application window for the German counterpart, advancing to the Knockouts under the mentorship of will.i.am.
  • Starmania (2021): He participated in the fifth season of Austria’s long-running talent show, reaching the final stages.

His career reached a monumental turning point on January 30, 2025, when national broadcaster ORF announced that Pietsch, performing under the moniker JJ, would represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song “Wasted Love”. Co-written by Pietsch alongside former Austrian Eurovision representative Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner, the track seamlessly fused high-register sopranist vocals with cinematic pop production.

On May 17, 2025, JJ triumphed in the grand final, securing 436 points overall (winning the jury vote with 258 points and pulling a strong 178 points from the televote). This victory marked historic milestones: he became the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent, as well as the first solo champion born in the 21st century.

Artistic Style and Impact

Pietsch performs as a sopranist—utilizing a specialized countertenor range that reaches into high soprano territory. His signature style bridges the gap between centuries-old classical traditions and catchy, high-impact radio pop.

Beyond his music, Pietsch has used his platform to advocate for representation. Openly queer, he has voiced a strong commitment to being an active, supportive voice for the LGBTQ+ community in Austria and beyond. Following his Eurovision win, his momentum has continued to surge with digital releases, award-winning collaborations (such as his viral mashup with Conchita Wurst), and dedicated followings across social media platforms.
