Mysore Airport Runway Length: Specifications, Capacity, and Future Expansion
Nestled just 8 kilometers south of Karnataka’s cultural capital, Mysore Airport (also known as Mandakalli Airport) serves as a vital gateway for tourists, business travelers, and aviation enthusiasts visiting the historic city of palaces. While the airport connects the region to key hubs, its infrastructure—specifically its runway dimensions—dictates the scale of operations it can handle.
Current Runway Specifications
Mysore Airport features a single, concrete-paved runway designated as 09/27.
- Length: 1,740 meters (5,709 feet)
- Width: 30 meters (98 feet)
- Surface Type: Concrete
- Designation: 09/27
Because of these dimensions, the runway is ideally suited for short-haul, regional flight operations. It comfortably accommodates turboprop aircraft such as the ATR 72 and Bombardier Q400, which form the backbone of commercial services operating out of the airport.
Operational Scope and Limitations
Constructed originally by the Princely State of Mysore in 1940 and later modernized and reinaugurated in May 2010, the airport has steadily handled regional traffic.
However, the current length of 1,740 meters creates strict aircraft limitations:
- Exclusion of Wide-Body/Narrow-Body Jets: Larger commercial jets like the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 require longer runways (typically 2,000+ meters) for safe takeoff and landing payloads, meaning they cannot currently land at Mysore.
- Regional Connectivity Focus: Airlines utilize turboprops to maintain efficient connectivity to major tech and financial hubs like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, optimizing the existing runway length.
The Road Ahead: Runway Expansion Proposals
To boost tourism, attract larger business investments, and enable direct connectivity to distant metropolitan cities, local stakeholders and government bodies have continuously pushed for infrastructure upgrades. Proposals and feasibility studies have been floated to extend the runway length significantly to accommodate larger narrow-body commercial jets.
While land acquisition and funding clearances dictate the timeline for these extensions, any future expansion of the 1,740-meter strip will mark a transformative chapter for Mysore’s aviation landscape, turning a regional aerodrome into a major commercial flight hub.
