Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? The Real Story Behind the Famous Educator
When millions of aspirants across India dream of cracking the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, one name often guides their journey: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. Known for his profound lectures, sharp analytical breakdown of social issues, and immense popularity on digital platforms, he is widely regarded as a legendary mentor.
Because of his deep mastery of the civil services syllabus, a common question arises: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?
The short answer is no. While he did clear the rigorous UPSC examination, he was never an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. Instead, his journey took a radically different path—one that traded a secure government chair for a lifetime of shaping future bureaucrats.
The 1996 UPSC Milestone: What Exam Did He Clear?
Dr. Vikas Divyakirti’s relationship with the UPSC civil services is often misunderstood. In 1996, at just 22 years of age, he appeared for the civil services examination for the very first time and successfully cleared it, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.
However, securing a rank in the UPSC exam does not automatically make everyone an IAS officer. The exam recruits candidates for various central services, including the IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and the Central Secretariat Service (CSS).
Based on his rank and preferences, Dr. Divyakirti was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service. He joined the government as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
Why He Resigned from Government Service
Though he achieved what millions consider the ultimate career milestone, Dr. Divyakirti felt that the slow-moving pace of bureaucratic red tape did not align with his true calling. Driven by a passion for literature, history, and teaching, he realized his heart lay in academia rather than file management.
After serving in government for a brief period—roughly a few months to a year—he made the bold and unconventional decision to resign from his post. Stepping away from a prestigious government job shocked many in his circle, but it paved the way for a revolutionary career in education.
Founding Drishti IAS and Transforming Education
Following his resignation, Dr. Divyakirti returned to his academic roots. Armed with multiple degrees from the University of Delhi—including a Bachelor of Arts in History, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature—he chose to bridge a major gap in the coaching ecosystem: providing high-quality, conceptual guidance for Hindi-medium UPSC aspirants.
In 1999, he founded Drishti IAS in a modest setup in Mukherjee Nagar, New Delhi. What started with a small group of students and borrowed resources has since expanded into a massive educational institution. Today, Drishti IAS is a household name across India, helping thousands of students navigate the complexities of the civil services exam through structured coaching, books, and digital learning apps.
Beyond the Classroom: Cultural Impact and Popularity
Though he never wore the badge of an active IAS officer, Dr. Divyakirti has arguably influenced the administrative landscape of India more profoundly than many bureaucrats. Through his lectures, digital media channels, and public discourses, he advocates for a “culture of discourse”—encouraging young minds to analyze public policy and socio-political issues critically.
