Soundtracking Your Way: How to Get Custom Songs on Spotify

We’ve all been there: you’re curating the ultimate playlist, but a crucial track—whether it’s a rare remix, an unreleased mixtape, a video game soundtrack, or an indie track not on streaming—is missing from Spotify’s massive catalog.

While Spotify doesn’t let listeners upload audio directly to its public cloud servers, it does feature a built-in tool called Local Files. This feature bridges the gap, allowing you to seamlessly integrate your own custom audio files into your library, mix them into standard playlists, and even sync them to your phone.

This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of getting your custom songs onto Spotify on both desktop and mobile.

Phase 1: Preparing Your Audio Files

Before diving into Spotify’s settings, a little preparation goes a long way. Spotify can be particular about file formats and metadata.

  • Convert to MP3: Spotify natively reads MP3, MP4, and M4P files. If your custom tracks are in formats like FLAC, WAV, or OGG, you’ll want to convert them to MP3 first.
  • Clean Up the Metadata: Use a free tag editor (such as Mp3tag on desktop) to ensure your song titles, artist names, and album artwork are properly filled out. Clean metadata ensures your custom tracks look professional alongside your streamed music rather than showing up as random file paths.
  • Create a Dedicated Folder: Move all your custom songs into a single, organized folder on your computer (like a dedicated “Spotify Custom” folder inside your default Music directory).

Phase 2: Enabling Local Files on Desktop

Because managing files is easiest on a computer, you’ll want to set this up using the Spotify desktop app (this feature is not supported on the web player).

  1. Open the Spotify app on your Windows PC or Mac.
  2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
  4. Toggle the switch next to Show Local Files to On.
  5. Click the Add a source button that appears.
  6. Navigate to and select the folder where you stored your custom MP3s.

Once completed, look at your left-hand sidebar, click into Your Library, and open the newly populated Local Files folder. All your custom tracks will be waiting there.

Phase 3: Adding Custom Songs to Playlists

To listen to your custom tracks easily—and more importantly, to sync them to your phone—you need to house them in a standard playlist. The default “Local Files” folder itself cannot be downloaded directly to mobile devices.

  1. Create a New Playlist in Spotify and name it whatever you like (
